Dogfish Design, Ireland - Graphic Design

All About Dogfish*

*All about Dogfish Design anyway. Not so much about actual dogfish (types of small shark).

Dogfish Design is the pseudonym of me, freelance graphic designer Barry O'Mahony. The name came about after a lengthy brainstorming session with friends. The reason for the name is as simple as this: I like dogs. We didn't think that "Dog Design" sounded all that great so we added other words to it. Dog-Fish was the easiest one to remember. Feel free, however to invent your own story for this and email it to me. If it's really good, I'll use that explanation instead of this rather dull one!

Based near Clonakilty in County Cork, Ireland, I commenced my design career with the intention of being the first graphic designer on the Moon. So far things haven't gone entirely to plan - NASA are refusing to negotiate.

Having graduated from Cork Institute of Technology with a BA in Design Communications, I initially founded Dogfish Design as a freelance co-operative, with the help of two good friends, Aaron and David. As time went by and the work started to flow in, I realised it was time get serious and went about transorming Dogfish Design into the super-cool design agency it is today.

As far as the visual side of things go, I take care of all of the design work myself. With that said, I'm not so arrogant as to think that everything I do is perfect. When I come up with ideas, I run them by my other design friends too and like to get their feedback. I guess I could call them consultants, but then they'd just get big heads.

When it comes to the technical side of web design, I like to think I'm fairly well-versed, but I know my limitations and I believe that my clients deserve the best quality of design that I can possibly provide. That's where my Code Monkeys come in. Although they hate being called Code Monkeys, these highly skilled multimedia experts still agree to work with me because I bribe them with tasty treats. These guys generally get called in for the high-end specialist web design projects. The rest of the time they just hang around being nerdy.

So, in short, I am Dogfish Design but sometimes, so are other people. If that's not very clear, I apologise. I'm not a writer, I'm a designer... and a pretty good one at that!

Dogfish Friends

Below are just some of the great people that I get to work with.

Iolo Pearse
Iolo

Iolo (pronounced YoLo) is one of my favourite Code Monkeys. This guy can do stuff that would make the average person's brain melt. When it comes to high-tech web wizardry, Iolo always has the answers.

Aaron O'Driscoll
Aaron

One of the original members of the old Dogfish co-op, Aaron has an enviable flair for all things crisp and clean. He can moonwalk and he's also a heck of an illustrator.

David McLoughlin
David

David is another old Dogfish friend and someone whose opinion I have always held in high regard. With a keen eye for the latest design trends, David's input is invaluable.
